Airbnb commits to funding one million emergency nights per year

Airbnb has introduced a new funding structure to support its nonprofit arm, Airbnb.org, pledging to donate 10 cents from every platform booking. Over the next five years, the company aims to contribute $500 million to ensure the organization can facilitate one million nights of free temporary housing each year for people displaced by disaster, medical crises, or violence.

Since its formal establishment in 2020, Airbnb.org has scaled its operations to respond to hundreds of crises annually. The initiative aims to move beyond ad-hoc responses, creating a sustainable funding model that allows for rapid deployment of housing via local partnerships. Hosts involved in the program are compensated for their stays, though many choose to discount their rates as part of the relief efforts.

CEO Brian Chesky has framed the commitment as a core long-term objective for the company, noting that the nonprofit has already supported 250,000 individuals to date. The program works by coordinating with local social services, such as 211 LA, to match evacuees with available properties when traditional shelter capacity is exceeded.

Despite the expansion of its humanitarian wing, Airbnb remains under scrutiny in several markets. The company is currently facing legal action from the City of Los Angeles, which has accused the platform of price gouging during wildfire emergencies. The company maintains that these new commitments demonstrate a dedicated path toward providing stable, accessible emergency housing infrastructure.
