Airport Association Calls for Modernization of Slot System

Airports Council International World, the trade association representing the world's airports, is urging a reform of the outdated airport slot system. The organization argues that the current system stifles competition and increases costs for passengers, while also hindering development for airlines and airports.

The council emphasizes the need for a modernized, transparent, and collaborative strategy to effectively utilize limited airport capacity. The objective is also to ensure competitive access to the market and to keep slot allocations in pace with increasing passenger demand.

Concerns raised during a meeting in Montreal highlight that the existing system was established when air traffic volumes were significantly lower. Consequently, it no longer effectively serves current global air traffic needs.

According to the association, reforms are essential to improve air traffic fluidity, cost-efficiency, and the passenger experience. Airports Council International World is calling on stakeholders to take joint action to develop new rules and procedures that better address the future challenges of air travel.
