Airtable executive's comments on layoffs spark backlash
Public remarks from Airtable's product lead, Federico Simionato, regarding the company's workforce reductions have drawn widespread criticism on social media. Commenters deemed the post insensitive and self-promotional.

Federico Simionato, a product leader for Airtable working under its new owner Bending Spoons, ignited a social media firestorm with an X post on Tuesday announcing significant layoffs at the company. Simionato stated in his post, "Today we're laying off a large part of the Airtable team."
Simionato justified the decision by expressing a belief that "small teams ship more and better," while also highlighting upcoming changes at Airtable, including new feature releases and performance enhancements. He thanked departing employees and encouraged employers to hire them.
Bending Spoons, which acquired Airtable for $1.28 billion last month, is known for its organizational restructuring. However, Simionato's post quickly drew outrage, with many commenters finding his tone insensitive and self-congratulatory. One user described the post as "genuinely pioneering work in the field of corporate sociopathy."
Simionato later responded to the criticism, stating he was "not celebrating at all" and preferred to be "upfront about why," while acknowledging it was a difficult day for employees. Alessandro Savarese, the new product lead for Airtable, confirmed that departing staff will receive "substantial separation packages" and that the decision does not reflect on their work.
According to PR expert Oliver Ellerton, such public statements can cause long-term reputational damage. He noted that while a company may believe in the efficiency of smaller teams, announcing layoffs is not the opportune moment to promote that strategy.
