Airtel Added More Mobile Users Than Jio in May
Bharti Airtel gained the highest number of new mobile subscribers in May, outpacing rival Reliance Jio, according to data from India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI). Despite Airtel's lead in additions, Jio maintained its position as the country's largest operator.

Bharti Airtel recorded more wireless subscriber additions than Reliance Jio in May, according to the latest data released by India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI). The report shows Airtel adding 2.93 million new wireless subscribers during the month, while Jio added 2.15 million.
Vodafone Idea also saw growth, acquiring 1.21 million subscribers. In contrast, the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 1.05 million users. Overall, India's total telephone subscriber base rose by 5.56 million to 1.343 billion in May, with the wireless segment growing by 5.5 million to 1.294 billion.
Despite Airtel's stronger monthly additions, Reliance Jio remains India's largest mobile operator with 501.44 million wireless subscribers. Airtel follows with 483.81 million subscribers. Vodafone Idea holds 198.66 million, and BSNL has 92.91 million.
The broadband subscriber base also expanded significantly, increasing by 6.71 million to reach 1.08 billion. The Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) segment, including 5G FWA services, showed rapid growth. The data also highlighted a high proportion of active users and a substantial increase in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) connections.
