Airtel does not distinguish between data used directly on a handset and data shared via a mobile hotspot on its unlimited 5G plan, according to a source who spoke to MediaNama. The operator has not enforced any limitations on hotspot sharing, relying instead on a 300 GB fair usage threshold.
The source clarified that a disputed clause previously circulating, which appeared to prohibit hotspot usage, was removed prior to its wider dissemination on social media. Implementing such a restriction would necessitate advanced network capabilities to differentiate tethered data from direct handset usage. This technical challenge intersects with India's net neutrality regulations and raises significant privacy concerns.
Upon exceeding the 300 GB monthly data cap, Airtel classifies usage as commercial. In such cases, the unlimited data benefit is no longer applicable, and the company reserves the right to throttle speeds according to its postpaid terms. Currently, there is no formal statement from Airtel addressing these specific technical or policy details.
The technical feasibility of detecting hotspot usage remains a question. Network traffic analysis, potentially involving packet header information like Time-to-Live (TTL) values, or operating system fingerprinting, could theoretically identify tethered connections. However, the implementation of such methods raises privacy considerations regarding the nature and extent of data inspection.
