A Chinese science program, "Right Now, China," has drawn attention to the significant water consumption linked to Artificial Intelligence technology. The latest episode reported that just five minutes of conversation with an AI can use the equivalent of one bottle of water.

The AI industry's entire value chain is estimated to consume approximately 1.5 million bottles of water per minute. In shorter periods, its water usage has been likened to filling an Olympic-sized swimming pool during a news broadcast.

Looking ahead, projections indicate that the AI industry's water consumption over a single 24-hour period could match the monthly household water usage of 13.86 million people in Wuhan. By 2025, the annual water consumption is projected to reach 23.7 billion cubic meters, exceeding the flood control storage capacity of the Three Gorges Dam.

This intensive water usage, primarily for cooling data centers and the extensive computing power needed for AI, raises concerns about whether the advancement of AI could lead to a wider water resource crisis.

"Right Now, China" is a program produced by the Central Radio and Television Corporation (CCTV) that focuses on China's development, culture, and social phenomena.
