AI's Thinking Overload Creates Hidden Leadership Costs
Overreliance on AI for decision-making is leading to "workslop," causing decision fatigue and uncertainty among leaders. Shopify's CEO has labeled AI-generated content "slop grenades."

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence into the workplace is revealing unexpected costs for leadership, primarily stemming from its overreliance. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke has described AI-generated emails, memos, and code as "slop grenades," noting that the technology often creates more work rather than saving time. This phenomenon, termed "workslop" by researchers at Stanford and BetterUp, can lead to decision fatigue and a general sense of unease among leaders.
The core issue arises when AI is used excessively to support decision-making processes. Instead of relying on leadership intuition or considered judgment, decisions are frequently processed through AI to the point of exhaustion. The output can be complex, data-heavy analyses that appear impressive but are difficult for humans to fully comprehend or act upon.
The effects of "workslop" extend beyond decision-making itself. It can foster imposter syndrome, exacerbate decision fatigue, and trigger negative emotions as individuals grapple with AI-generated content that lacks clear justification or human oversight. This can result in a cycle where unsure employees either delay tasks or pass on unclear AI outputs without fully understanding them.
Effective leadership requires ensuring that all AI-generated material is understood and defensible. Ceding too much decision-making authority to AI can lead to paralysis, as the technology may generate numerous options without clear prioritization. True leadership involves human judgment and clear direction, rather than merely managing AI-produced data streams.
