AI's Water Consumption Extends to Power Generation and Chip Manufacturing

While the energy demands of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are widely discussed, its substantial water consumption is gaining attention. Beyond the water used for cooling data centers, the overall water footprint of AI is significantly larger, including the water required for electricity generation and semiconductor manufacturing.

Research indicates that water used upstream in power plants and chip fabrication can double or triple a data center's total water impact. Thermoelectric power plants, which supply much of the electricity for data centers, withdraw and consume significant amounts of water for cooling. Similarly, producing a single advanced processor can require thousands of gallons of ultrapure water.

By 2030, U.S. data centers could require an additional 697–1,451 million gallons of water capacity per day if current trends persist, an amount comparable to New York City's daily usage. This escalating demand intensifies pressure on regions already facing water scarcity.

Water availability is emerging as a critical constraint, potentially shaping the future location of data centers. In water-stressed regions like the American Southwest, communities are becoming more sensitive to large industrial water users, and water access may become a more significant limiting factor for AI growth than electricity.

Companies must begin treating water as a strategic resource, akin to energy, focusing on management, reuse, and optimization. Proactive water strategies are likely to become essential for long-term operational resilience, permitting, and scalability.
