Akai to release open-source firmware for upcoming MPC Sample Key

Akai has confirmed plans to open-source the firmware for its upcoming MPC Sample Key, a move designed to engage the hardware-modding community. By granting developers early access to the unreleased device, the company intends to foster a community-driven development environment for its new keyboard-based sampler.

The hardware functions as a keyboard-equipped version of the existing MPC Sample, omitting traditional pads in favor of keys. The software is being tailored to support pitch and modulation wheels, distinguishing it from the higher-tier MPC Key 37 already present in Akai's lineup.

This shift toward an open-source model represents a departure from Akai’s standard product strategy, which has historically relied on proprietary, closed-system software. The move is viewed as an effort to incentivize the customization community to build unique software modifications for the hardware.
