Swedish biotech firm Akiram Therapeutics has received recognition for the preclinical validation of its radiopharmaceutical candidate AKIR001. The study was selected as best basic investigation and overall featured article for the February issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine (JNM). An image from the study also appears on the journal's cover.

AKIR001 is a targeted radiotherapeutic therapy in development for cancer. It targets the CD44v6 marker and is currently being evaluated in a first-in-human Phase 1 clinical trial. The preclinical data presented in the journal demonstrate selective tumor uptake, favorable dosimetry, and clear antitumor effects in relevant models.

This finding strengthens the scientific foundation for AKIR001 as the program advances in clinical development. "We are pleased to see the study recognized both as best basic investigation and as overall featured article in JNM," said Akiram Therapeutics CEO Marika Nestor. "It is a strong recognition of the preclinical work behind AKIR001 and adds further weight as the program advances in clinical development."

The Phase 1 trial, evaluating AKIR001's safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in patients with CD44v6-expressing tumors, is conducted and sponsored by Karolinska University Hospital. The study includes patients with anaplastic and iodine-refractory thyroid cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, gynecological squamous cell carcinoma, and non-small cell lung cancer.
