Aktion Deutschland Hilft Expands Aid Operations in Ukraine

The German disaster relief organization Aktion Deutschland Hilft has substantially increased its aid efforts in Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in response to the ongoing conflict.

Two years after the full-scale invasion, the humanitarian situation within Ukraine has dramatically worsened. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), approximately 14.6 million people, representing about 40 percent of the country's population, are in need of humanitarian assistance. This figure is nearly four times higher than before February 24, 2022.

Amidst this escalating crisis, the number of projects undertaken by Aktion Deutschland Hilft's member organizations in Ukraine surged from just over 100 in the first year of the war to 338 in 2023. "Against this backdrop, the organizations within the Aktion Deutschland Hilft alliance have massively expanded their support," stated Dr. Markus Moke, Head of Projects and Quality Assurance at Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

The conflict continues to inflict severe damage on infrastructure, including homes and schools, and has displaced millions. The long-term reconstruction of the country is expected to be a multi-year endeavor.
