Berlin – Aktion Deutschland Hilft, an umbrella organization of German aid agencies, has launched the "Journalismuspreis Humanitäre Hilfe" (Journalism Award for Humanitarian Aid) to foster deeper understanding and reporting on humanitarian crises. Supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, the award seeks to encourage journalists to cover long-term humanitarian challenges that often receive less media attention than acute disasters.
The award, established in 2015, targets young German journalists aged 21 to 29. Recipients receive travel stipends to visit humanitarian aid projects, enabling them to gain firsthand insights and report on the complexities of humanitarian work. The initiative aims to break stereotypes and raise awareness about persistent humanitarian needs, encouraging reporting that moves beyond immediate crisis coverage.
The German Federal Foreign Office, which oversees the country's humanitarian assistance, acts as a financial partner for the award. Its role is to promote broader awareness and understanding of humanitarian aid globally, rather than direct operational involvement. Aktion Deutschland Hilft manages the award's execution.
The application period for the current award cycle has closed. An independent jury evaluates submissions, focusing on journalistic works that employ innovative formats and multimedia approaches to reflect evolving media consumption and utilize modern technologies.
