Aktion Deutschland Hilft prepares aid for Ebola outbreak in DR Congo

Aktion Deutschland Hilft, Europe's largest medical aid organization, is preparing to support local aid workers in areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo affected by an Ebola outbreak. The organization is currently in discussions with various German, international, and local NGOs to coordinate relief efforts.

The focus is on providing protective equipment and medical supplies, particularly for healthcare professionals. Emmanuel Limi, who leads several aid projects in the region, highlighted the critical role of medical staff. "Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable during such an outbreak, as they may come into contact with many infected individuals, and their work is crucial for containing the spread of the virus," Limi stated.

Aktion Deutschland Hilft is assessing local needs to determine the best methods for procuring and delivering aid. Options include supplies from the organization's large warehouse in Germany or local procurement within the African region. The organization has been active in the Democratic Republic of Congo for over twenty years, in the South Kivu province, bordering the affected provinces of Ituri and North Kivu. Preparations are also underway to protect their own local partners and staff from the Ebola virus.

Eastern Congo, where both the Ebola outbreak and Aktion Deutschland Hilft's project areas are located, has been plagued by conflicts between armed rebel groups and government forces for years. This instability has displaced many people, potentially facilitating the spread of the virus. "High population movement in the region can contribute to the virus's spread. We aim to help mitigate this risk," Limi added. Aktion Deutschland Hilft is currently seeking donations to assist those affected by the Ebola outbreak.
