Aktion Deutschland Hilft raises 10.6 million euros for global famine relief

The German aid alliance Aktion Deutschland Hilft, in partnership with public broadcaster WDR, has closed its latest fundraising campaign with a total of 10.6 million euros. The initiative, titled ”Der Westen hilft,” focused on supporting humanitarian efforts to address global hunger.

The majority of the funds, 7.4 million euros, were raised through the ”WDR 2 Weihnachtswunder” broadcast. During the five-day event in late December, radio hosts operated from a glass studio in Dortmund, accepting song requests from listeners in exchange for donations. The campaign saw broad engagement, including contributions from local craftspeople and community groups.

Manuela Roßbach, Executive Board Member of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, stated that the campaign successfully brought focus to the precarious conditions faced by millions affected by famine. She highlighted the role of the media in humanizing the issue.

The collected funds are currently being distributed across approximately 50 humanitarian projects. These initiatives are focused on regions currently experiencing acute crisis, including parts of Africa, Ukraine, Yemen, and South Asia.
