Alex Theatre Returns to Film Roots with New 70mm Projection
The historic Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, is launching a new cinematic era with the installation of a 70mm film projector and a special engagement of Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'.

Glendale, Calif. – The historic Alex Theatre is opening a new chapter in its century-long history by presenting Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" in a special 70mm film engagement from July 17 to August 6, 2026.
The three-week run marks the theater's return to exhibiting first-run studio films after a 35-year absence. Established in 1925, the Alex Theatre has been a beloved cultural landmark in Southern California. During Hollywood's Golden Age, it hosted premieres and studio presentations. In recent decades, the venue has evolved to include a diverse mix of music, dance, comedy, and new media events.
The theater has made a significant investment in installing state-of-the-art sound systems and both 70mm and 35mm film projectors. This initiative aims to preserve the highest standards of motion picture presentation on film. As filmmakers and audiences embrace the return of premium theatrical experiences, the Alex Theatre is positioning itself as a destination for exceptional cinema.
"We are reclaiming our place as one of LA's premiere venues for Cinema. With our new large format film projectors and growing community of film curators, we look forward to hosting LA's cinephiles and movie lovers of all ages in our historic theatre," said Miles Williams, Artistic Director at the Alex Theatre.
Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" was selected to inaugurate the theater's new era, combining Nolan's vision with a grand narrative. The Alex Theatre, with its 1,300-seat capacity and 70mm projection capabilities, aims to attract a new generation of filmgoers.
