AlexCar clarifies car seat cover compatibility with airbags
Automotive accessory retailer AlexCar has published a guide addressing concerns about car seat covers interfering with airbag deployment.

Automotive accessory retailer AlexCar has released a guide to address potential safety concerns regarding car seat covers and their compatibility with airbags. The guide aims to inform car owners whether seat covers might hinder the proper deployment of airbags in the event of a crash.
According to AlexCar, the compatibility of seat covers with airbags depends on several factors, including the fit, material, installation method, and seams of the cover. Properly designed and installed covers are not expected to significantly impede airbag function. Crucially, there should be no obstructions to the airbag's deployment path, and the cover should have seams designed to open easily under pressure.
Particular attention is advised for front seats, where airbags are often located within the seat or steering wheel. AlexCar specifically recommends snugly fitting, breathable, and airbag-certified covers for these positions. Thin leather or vinyl covers that conform tightly to seat contours are generally considered safe. Conversely, thick, padded, or rigid covers could potentially obstruct airbag release.
Concerns for rear seats are generally less pronounced as airbags are not typically housed within the rear seat cushions. However, some vehicles may feature side airbags for rear occupants, necessitating the same caution when selecting covers. AlexCar emphasizes that all covers must be securely installed and free from loose material that could interfere with airbag function.
