Algae Extract Shows Efficacy in Relieving Prostate Symptoms

Australian biotechnology company Marinova has released findings from a clinical study indicating that its unique marinalgae extract can relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The newly published randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that fucoidan, a natural compound from brown seaweed, significantly improved urinary symptoms in men with BPH.

BPH is a prevalent condition affecting a substantial percentage of men globally, particularly over age 60. Associated symptoms, such as difficulties with urination and increased urinary frequency, can significantly diminish quality of life. Lead researcher Dr. Barbara Wimmer noted that fucoidan's documented bioactive properties motivated the study, given the limited number of natural compounds previously clinically investigated for prostate health support.

The 90-day study involved 88 men aged 45-80 who received either a daily fucoidan supplement or a placebo. Participants taking the high-purity fucoidan product demonstrated clinically significant improvements in both voiding and storage-related symptoms compared to the placebo group. Quality of life related to urinary symptoms also improved markedly.

Assessments were made using the internationally recognized International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). The study suggests fucoidan is safe and effective in addressing BPH symptoms, potentially offering new avenues for natural-based interventions. The research was published in the journal Research and Reports in Urology.
