Algorithmic Justice League Launches Alliance to Combat Nonconsensual AI Recording
The Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) has launched the Off Record Zones Alliance to establish spaces where consent is prioritized and AI wearable recording is turned off.
The Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) has announced the formation of the Off Record Zones Alliance, a new initiative aimed at creating spaces where consent is respected and AI-enabled wearable recording is deactivated. The initiative seeks to address growing privacy concerns as smart glasses and other AI wearables become more widespread.
This launch follows a recent article in Nature by AJL founder and AI researcher Dr. Joy Buolamwini. In the piece, Buolamwini warns that increasingly discreet and affordable AI wearables threaten to normalize nonconsensual recording, likening the issue to "secondhand surveillance." She highlights the risk of individuals' private conversations and likenesses being captured without their knowledge or consent.
The Off Record Zones Alliance provides businesses, organizations, and individuals with tools to establish "consent-conscious spaces." Partners can commit to creating physical "Off Record Zones" in locations such as restaurants or meeting rooms, using provided signage and policy guidelines. Virtual zones can also be established by requesting participants to disable recording devices.
Inaugural partners include Equality Now, All Tech Is Human, and the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA). Equality Now emphasizes the heightened risks of covert recording for women and girls, while NAVA advocates for voice actors' rights against unauthorized AI voice cloning. Both organizations bring significant expertise in advocating for privacy and ethical technology use.
AJL will designate its upcoming "Decade of Impact" anniversary celebration on November 14 as an Off Record Zone event. The alliance encourages individuals to request these zones in places they frequent and invites organizations to join in establishing these privacy-preserving environments.
