Alibaba Chairman Joseph Tsai Advocates for Open-Source AI Strategy
At the World Internet Conference, Alibaba’s Joseph Tsai confirmed that the company has released over 470 open-source Qwen models to foster industry-wide accessibility.
Speaking at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen on November 3, Alibaba Group Chairman Joseph Tsai stated that open-source frameworks are essential for the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. Tsai argued that by lowering development costs, open-source technology provides critical access to AI for small-to-medium enterprises and developing economies facing resource constraints.
Alibaba has released more than 470 variants of its Qwen AI models to date. The company reports that these models have accumulated over four billion downloads globally, with developers building more than 330,000 derivative models based on the open-source architecture. Tsai likened this approach to academic institutions sharing research to benefit the broader global community.
Tsai also reiterated his long-term outlook on AI integration. He anticipates that within five years, AI will transition from a standalone topic into an invisible, foundational infrastructure underlying all business operations. This perspective includes his previous suggestions that regions like Europe should prioritize open-source AI to build domestic capabilities and mitigate reliance on external technology infrastructures.
