Allianz Trade: UK Manufacturing Sector Faces Rising Risks

The United Kingdom's manufacturing sector is facing mounting risks, according to a sector report released by Allianz Trade in December 2024. Companies have delayed spending in the lead-up to the Autumn Budget, resulting in the first decline in factory activity since April, as indicated by the latest Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data. Future expectations for the sector have also fallen to a nine-month low.

The report highlights several key challenges impacting the industry. Slower production growth and a downward trend in export demand from Europe, a region experiencing very low growth, are significant concerns. While inflation has eased, reducing pressure on input costs, high freight expenses are largely being passed on to customers. The overall situation varies, however, depending on end-user demand and whether a company exports to markets currently facing sluggish growth.

Strengths within the sector include high-end manufacturers with skilled labor and specialized products, often operating under long-term supply agreements. Reshoring efforts, driven by global shipping delays and disruptions, are also creating opportunities for local manufacturers. Weaknesses identified are concentration risk with key customers or suppliers and rising input and energy costs, which particularly affect commodity-focused, low-margin manufacturers.

Technological adoption, ongoing supply chain issues exacerbated by global events like Red Sea shipping attacks, uncertain overseas market outlooks, and labor market pressures are identified as critical trends shaping the industry. The report also notes the continued impact of Brexit-related trade barriers on supply chains and exports.
