Almonds have been enjoyed for centuries, with a history originating from the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Currently, the state of California stands as the leading producer, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the global supply.

The use of almonds has been intertwined with human diet and culture for millennia. Ancient Romans showered newlyweds with almonds as a fertility charm, and they are mentioned in biblical texts. Along the Silk Road, almonds provided sustenance for travelers. Spain maintained a significant almond industry, and Franciscan padres brought the almond tree from Spain to California in the 1700s.

By the early 20th century, California's almond industry was firmly established. Through crossbreeding, many of today's common varieties were developed. Over the past three decades, California's almond yield has quadrupled, with cultivation expanding across more than half a million acres in the San Joaquin, Fresno, and Sacramento valleys.

Californian almonds are the state's top agricultural export by dollar value and acreage, ranking as the largest U.S. specialty crop export. Globally, almonds are utilized in diverse ways: in Japan as chocolate-covered treats, in China as seasonal snacks, in India as brain food and in sweets, across Europe in traditional recipes and celebrations, and in the U.S., they are consumed in various forms from almond butter to almond milk.
