Alphabet faces pressure as AI investment costs outpace search revenue growth

Alphabet’s latest quarterly earnings reveal a cooling period for its core advertising business, even as global search query volume hits a five-year high. Search revenue growth fell to 12 percent year-over-year, a significant decrease from the 17 percent recorded in the previous quarter.

Monetization of search traffic also saw a decline, with paid click growth decelerating from 13 percent to 8 percent. The data highlights a disconnect between the high volume of user engagement and the company’s ability to convert that traffic into ad-driven revenue at historical rates.

Investors are scrutinizing these figures against the backdrop of Alphabet’s massive capital expenditure, which is projected to reach approximately $200 billion this year. Much of this funding is directed toward AI infrastructure, placing pressure on the company to prove that these investments will eventually yield returns comparable to the search-based ad model.

Following the earnings announcement, Alphabet shares dropped roughly 14 percent, reflecting market caution regarding the company's transition to an AI-focused business strategy. The firm now faces the challenge of maintaining its dominant position while managing the high costs associated with generative AI implementation.
