Alphabet shares slide as Q3 results and AI spending miss expectations
Alphabet Inc. shares dropped over 10% following third-quarter results that missed Wall Street targets and revealed a significant deficit in free cash flow.

Alphabet Inc. is facing a historic post-earnings decline as investors react to third-quarter 2026 results that fell short of market expectations. Shares dropped more than 10% in premarket trading, putting the stock on track for its largest single-day post-earnings fall in company history.
Quarterly revenue reached $127.6 billion with adjusted earnings per share of $2.67, both missing consensus analyst estimates. The company reported a negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion, significantly higher than the projected $2.7 billion. This financial pressure stems from $51.4 billion in capital expenditures largely dedicated to scaling AI infrastructure and data centers.
Beyond the immediate financials, investors are expressing concern over the search division's growth, which at 12% failed to meet expectations. There is growing unease that the rise of independent AI chatbots, such as those from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, may be eroding the dominance of Google’s traditional search engine model. Alphabet has signaled continued heavy spending, projecting annual capital expenditures between $195 billion and $205 billion for 2026.
