Alphabet stock drops following Q3 earnings miss and rising AI costs

Alphabet reported $128 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2026, a 25 percent increase compared to the previous year. Despite top-line growth, net income fell to $26 billion, a $9 billion decline year-over-year. Investors reacted negatively, driving the company’s stock price down by 12 percent during trading hours.

The earnings per share of $2.12 significantly trailed the $3.02 consensus projection held by analysts. A primary concern for shareholders is the company's admission that AI-integrated search results generate lower margins than traditional organic search, even as the company plans to increase capital expenditures for AI infrastructure in the coming year.

While the search segment faces margin pressure, Alphabet's Cloud division exceeded analyst estimates, generating $30 billion in revenue for the quarter. This performance in cloud services provides a counterbalance to the mounting costs and revenue inefficiencies associated with deploying new AI search capabilities.
