ALPS Names Brian Turnbow to Lead Next-Generation AI Data Center Development
Italian startup ALPS has appointed Brian Turnbow as Technical Director for AI, overseeing the development of next-generation AI and high-performance computing data centers with a focus on sustainable infrastructure.

Italian data center firm ALPS has appointed Brian Turnbow as its Technical Director for AI. Turnbow will lead the company's expansion into next-generation AI and high-performance computing (HPC) data centers, emphasizing a sustainable approach that integrates renewable energy sources and reuses existing assets.
The move comes as the demand for data center power intensifies. In Italy alone, requests for grid connections for data centers have surged past 100 GW, highlighting the critical need for efficient and sustainable infrastructure. ALPS aims to address this by strategically locating data centers where energy is readily available, including outside major hubs, thereby reducing reliance on congested grid areas.
Under Turnbow's direction, ALPS plans to leverage existing industrial sites, reusing network connections and buildings where feasible. This strategy aims to develop a more sustainable IT infrastructure by minimizing land use and the need for new construction. The company intends to repatriate its international expertise to Italy, collaborating with local engineering and industrial firms.
Brian Turnbow brings over 25 years of experience in telecommunications and digital infrastructure. "My goal is to translate these requirements into consistent design decisions, building flexible, scalable, and sustainable computing capacity while utilizing renewable energy sources and existing assets," Turnbow stated. ALPS, founded in 2018, has secured significant funding for its international growth.
