Alstom and Berlin's public transport operator BVG have launched new, extra-long trams into service in the German capital. The first of Alstom's Urbanliner trams, measuring 50 meters, officially entered passenger service on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, on the M4 line, one of Berlin's busiest tram routes.

The new, significantly longer trams offer substantially increased passenger capacity, supporting BVG's fleet renewal program. "We are proud that the new Urbanliners are playing a central role in this," said Christoph Klaes, Alstom's Sales Manager for Central and Northern Europe. The introduction followed minor infrastructure adjustments at Alexanderplatz, including structural reinforcements in a subway tunnel.

BVG CEO Henrik Falk stated that the new trams ensure the operational performance of the transport system for decades to come. "We are consistently investing in modern vehicles and efficient infrastructure for Berlin," Falk commented. He highlighted that the introduction of these trams, alongside other ongoing public transport projects, reflects a strategic commitment to the city's future mobility.

Franziska Giffey, Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Operations, and Ute Bonde, Senator for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, attended the official launch. Giffey noted that the Urbanliner signifies a step forward in capacity, comfort, and accessibility, aligning with the needs of a growing metropolitan area.

Deliveries of the Urbanliner trams from Alstom are ongoing, with the fleet expected to grow to around 15 vehicles by the end of this year. All 65 ordered trams are anticipated to be delivered by 2030. Initially approved for the M4 line, the trams are slated for future deployment on other routes within Berlin's network.
