Alstom and Saudi Arabia Railways extend freight performance contract
Alstom has secured a five-year, €22 million contract with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) to enhance the reliability of onboard systems for SAR's North Freight fleet along the Kingdom's North-South corridor.

Alstom, a global mobility provider, has signed a five-year contract valued at €22 million with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR). The agreement aims to bolster the reliability and daily performance of SAR's North Freight fleet, operating along the Kingdom's crucial North-South rail corridor.
The North-South corridor serves as a vital logistics artery for Saudi Arabia, transporting approximately 13.5 million tons of freight annually. It connects mining sites with processing facilities and export points, playing a key role in the nation's industrial activities. Alstom's new contract includes FlexCare Perform maintenance services for the critical onboard systems installed on SAR’s locomotive fleet. These systems are essential for daily operations, monitoring train performance, managing speed, and communicating with signaling infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient freight movement.
The agreement will introduce a more proactive maintenance approach, integrating real-time monitoring with enhanced spare parts availability. This initiative is designed to improve fleet readiness and reduce response times for any operational issues. The scope also encompasses system upgrades, maintenance documentation, digital tools, and targeted workforce training.
Mohamed Khalil, Managing Director Middle East at Alstom, highlighted the partnership's strategic importance. "Our partnership with SAR is built on a shared ambition to strengthen rail performance and support the Kingdom’s long-term transport objectives," Khalil stated. The collaboration is expected to enhance reliability, support local talent development, and create long-term value for Saudi Arabia’s freight sector.
