Alstom Develops AI Assistant for Train Maintenance
Alstom has introduced a new AI-powered tool, "Talk to My Train," designed to accelerate train maintenance and fault diagnosis in depots.

Alstom, a company in the railway sector, has developed a new AI-powered tool called "Talk to My Train" aimed at enhancing train maintenance efficiency and reducing fault diagnosis time. The tool consolidates a vast amount of railway knowledge, including maintenance history, technical documentation, and expert insights, to provide maintenance teams with rapid access to relevant information for resolving issues.
Traditionally, troubleshooting relied on manual data collection and system monitoring. "Talk to My Train" functions as an intelligent layer atop existing systems, allowing technicians to ask questions, such as whether a similar fault has occurred previously, with the tool retrieving information on past cases and their resolutions. This significantly speeds up the critical initial hour of fault diagnosis, essential for returning a train to service.
According to Alstom, the system's effectiveness hinges on reliable data, strong governance, and deep railway expertise. Henri Badaro, Alstom's Vice President for Data and AI Governance, highlighted that incomplete records or inconsistent terminology can undermine the system's ability to deliver trustworthy answers. The system also considers the specific characteristics of an individual train, such as its configuration and operating environment, aiding in more accurate diagnoses.
"Talk to My Train" integrates expertise from various domains, including rolling stock, signaling, train control, infrastructure, and services. It aims to provide evidence-based answers, enabling technicians to inspect the source of alerts, applicable maintenance instructions, and relevant wiring schematics. This traceability is crucial in railway operations, where decisions directly impact safety and service quality.
Alstom emphasizes that while data is abundant, its consistent and validated interpretation is key to creating operational value. "Talk to My Train" seeks to connect dispersed information and experience into a coherent whole, ensuring that similar events are understood consistently across all operating environments and projects.
