Alstom launches supported internship program in UK for learning disabled
Alstom has launched the ASPIRE supported internship program at its UK Derby factory, offering work experience and structured support for young people with learning disabilities.

In May 2026, Alstom, a manufacturer of trains, initiated its ASPIRE supported internship program in the United Kingdom. The initiative provides practical work experience and structured support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at Alstom's Litchurch Lane Works in Derby.
The program aims to enhance employment prospects for participants by equipping them with necessary skills and workplace experience. Interns are currently involved in Alstom's refurbishment project for CrossCountry Voyager trains, collaborating with Derby College Group. Derby College Group provides job coaching and classroom-based learning alongside the internship.
"We've been genuinely impressed by the interns’ knowledge of both historic and modern rolling stock – it’s clear they’re passionate about what they’re doing, and it’s a joy to have them on board," said Nina Atwal, Head of Social Value UK and Ireland at Alstom. "Working with Derby College Group has already shown how powerful collaboration can be, especially when it comes to creating meaningful opportunities for underrepresented groups."
Research indicates that only 4.8% of individuals with a learning disability or autism spectrum condition in England are in permanent paid employment. Alstom's supported internship program seeks to facilitate sustained, paid employment by equipping individuals with essential skills through hands-on learning in the workplace.
