Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility, has released its first impact report for Canada, detailing its annual economic contribution to the country. The report, developed in collaboration with EY, states that Alstom contributes approximately $575 million to Canada's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) annually. This figure underscores the company's significant economic footprint within the nation.
During the fiscal year 2023/24, Alstom procured $448 million in goods and services from 920 Canadian suppliers. As the sole national train manufacturer in Canada, Alstom operates industrial and engineering sites across several Canadian cities and is responsible for manufacturing nearly 80% of all passenger rail cars currently in service nationwide.
The company's operations in Canada directly employ 5,000 individuals and indirectly support an additional 3,300 jobs. Alstom also provides over 100 internships annually. Furthermore, the company has contributed $697,000 to communities and charitable organizations over the last three years, benefiting 40,000 people.
Alstom highlights its role in supporting Canada's decarbonization objectives by 2050. The company launched a Green Innovation Centre near Montreal in 2022 to accelerate sustainable advancements in rail mobility. Notably, Alstom was involved in the operation of a hydrogen-powered passenger train in the Charlevoix region, marking a significant step towards carbon-free transportation.
