Alstom secures €95 million contracts to equip Ireland's national rail fleet with ETCS

Alstom, a manufacturer of rail transport solutions, has secured contracts worth approximately €95 million from Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail). The agreements are for the onboard deployment of the European Train Control System (ETCS) across up to 176 vehicles in Ireland's national rail fleet.

The scope of work includes the design, manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of ETCS Level 1 onboard equipment. This project is a key component of Ireland's Train Protection System (TPS) National Rollout Programme, which aims to progressively implement ETCS as the country's principal signalling and train control technology.

ETCS is a European standard based on in-cab equipment that supervises train movements and can automatically stop a train if necessary. The system's implementation is considered central to the digital future of Ireland's railway network.

The contracts were signed in Dublin on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by Andrew DeLeone, Europe Region President at Alstom, and Mary Considine, Chief Executive Officer at Iarnród Éireann. The project builds upon Alstom's previous work, including the delivery of Ireland's first ETCS-equipped train and initial trackside ETCS deployments.
