Alstom secures over €500 million contract for AlUla tramway in Saudi Arabia

French transport manufacturer Alstom has secured a contract exceeding €500 million with The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) for the development of a pioneering battery-powered tramway system. The project aims to enhance sustainable mobility in the historically rich region.

The new tramway line will span 22.4 kilometers and include 17 stations, connecting AlUla's five core historical districts. This includes significant UNESCO World Heritage sites like AlUla Old Town and Hegra Historical City. The system is designed to be the world's longest catenary-free, battery-powered tram line.

Alstom's scope of work encompasses the complete system design, integration, installation, and commissioning. The company will supply 20 Citadis B battery trams and provide power supply, signalling, communication, and depot equipment. A 10-year maintenance contract for the trams is also included, utilizing predictive maintenance tools for fleet management.

The project aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, emphasizing environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The AlUla tramway is intended to offer residents and tourists an environmentally friendly and convenient means of accessing the region's cultural attractions.
