Alstom secures share of Melbourne Suburban Rail Loop contract
Alstom has been awarded a 1 billion euro share of a contract for the East package of Melbourne's Suburban Rail Loop in Australia. The deal includes automated metro trains and digital systems.
Transport company Alstom has secured a 1 billion euro share of a contract for the eastern section of Melbourne's Suburban Rail Loop project in Australia. The overall contract, valued at 4.9 billion euros, was awarded by the Suburban Rail Loop Authority to the TransitLinX Alliance, which includes Alstom, John Holland, KBR, WSP, and RATP Dev.
Alstom's scope of work encompasses the supply of 13 automated Metropolis metro trains and a 15-year maintenance agreement. The company will also provide the Urbalis Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, cybersecurity solutions, communications infrastructure, and platform screen doors. Alstom is also responsible for the overall system integration.
The trains will be assembled and built at Alstom's Dandenong facility in Melbourne. The Metropolis trains are designed for Grade of Automation 4 (GOA4) operation, with the first units scheduled to enter service in 2035. Maintenance operations will be conducted from a purpose-built facility in Heatherton.
This project represents a significant investment in Melbourne's public transport network, aiming to enhance connectivity across the city's expanding suburbs. The contract further solidifies Alstom's position in the Australian market for large-scale transport infrastructure projects.
