Alstom to Deliver Digital Signalling for Queensland Rail Network

Alstom has been contracted to deliver next-generation digital signalling for Queensland's rail network in Australia. The company has secured the first tranche of a €214 million (AUD 354 million) contract, with the initial €69 million (AUD 114 million) portion focused on upgrading the Sunshine Coast Line.

The project, known as The Wave, will see Alstom implement its ONVIA Control European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 signalling solution for Sector 1 North of the new line. This upgrade will also integrate a 5G digital radio system supplied by a third party. The work is part of Queensland's wider ETCS Program.

The program aims to modernize the rail network to increase capacity, improve reliability, and support future growth in South East Queensland. It also serves to prepare the state's transport infrastructure for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Alstom's ETCS Level 2 solution is a radio-based system used globally to enhance network capacity and safety.

Beyond the technology deployment, Alstom will establish a Queensland Mobility Supply Chain Centre of Excellence. The company will also invest in apprenticeships, traineeships, and partnerships with local educational institutions to develop future rail professionals and strengthen local capabilities.
