Alstom, a global leader in mobility solutions, announced on June 26, 2026, that its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), has been awarded a new five-year maintenance services contract.

The agreement, valued at €107 million, covers comprehensive maintenance for 250 WAG-12B electric locomotives at the MELPL Nagpur Depot. This contract renewal follows the successful completion of a previous four-year agreement, reinforcing Indian Railways' confidence in Alstom's services.

The 12,000 HP WAG-12B locomotives are crucial for India's freight transportation network, capable of hauling 6,000-tonne loads at speeds up to 120 kph. Their deployment on Dedicated Freight Corridors aims to increase freight capacity while supporting environmental goals by lowering carbon emissions.

Under the contract, MELPL will be responsible for the full maintenance of the 250 locomotives and the depot's infrastructure. Alstom will continue to utilize its specialized Prompt Response Teams (PRTs), equipped with tools and spares at strategic locations nationwide, to ensure rapid issue resolution and maximize fleet availability. The agreement also includes Alstom's commitment to skill development through ongoing training programs.
