Alstom to manufacture 313 new train cars for VIA Rail Canada

French transportation manufacturer Alstom has secured a significant contract with VIA Rail Canada to modernize the national passenger rail service's long-distance fleet. The agreement mandates Alstom to build 313 new train cars and provide long-term technical support and spare parts.
The contract is valued at approximately CAD 4.7 billion (around EUR 3 billion). This deal is expected to bolster Canada's rail manufacturing sector by creating and sustaining hundreds of skilled jobs across the country. Design and engineering will take place at Alstom's facility in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, with carbody manufacturing in La Pocatière, Quebec, and final assembly in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The new fleet will serve eight major routes across Canada, aiming to enhance passenger comfort, accessibility, and connectivity on the country's long-distance, regional, and remote lines. Alstom has described the agreement as an "emblematic project" and a testament to the trust placed in the company.
Alstom is a global provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, having previously supplied trains and trams to numerous major cities and rail operators worldwide. This contract further solidifies Alstom's presence in the North American rail market.
