Alstom to modernise Craiova–Caransebeș railway section in Romania

Alstom has signed a contract to modernise the Craiova–Caransebeș railway section, Lot 2, a 44km stretch between Filiasi and Igiroasa in Romania. The contract was awarded by CFR Infrastructura, Romania's national rail infrastructure operator.

The project involves deploying advanced digital signalling and upgrading electrification systems to enhance speed, capacity, and interoperability along one of Romania's most important railway corridors. The work includes the implementation of ERTMS Level 2 signalling and GSM-R communications, aiming to achieve speeds of up to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight.

Alstom is undertaking the project with civil works partner Terna Tourist Technical and Maritime Societe Anonyme, operating as the TrackWorks consortium. Both companies are also involved in Lot 1 works on the same section. Terna will manage the civil works, while Alstom will provide the signalling and electrification systems. The implementation period for the contract is set at 60 months.

This modernisation is part of the TEN-T Orient/East-Med corridor and aims to improve Romania's integration into the European rail system. The upgrade is expected to increase operational reliability and efficiency, facilitating smoother cross-border rail flows and better connectivity with future modernised sections. Alstom has maintained a presence in Romania for over 30 years.
