Paris/Lausanne – Rail technology company Alstom has signed a €295 million contract with Transports publics de la région lausannoise (tl) to modernise the Lausanne m2 metro line.

The project will involve installing a new communications-based train control (CBTC) system and undertaking a mid-life modernisation of the existing train fleet. These upgrades are intended to increase service frequency and passenger capacity on the metro line, which serves as the backbone of public transport in the Lausanne region.

The new CBTC system, Alstom's Urbalis Fluence solution, will enable trains to operate closer together with greater precision. This is expected to reduce waiting times and accommodate growing passenger demand, while maintaining high safety standards. The system's train-centric architecture aims to minimise infrastructure changes.

The current m2 metro train fleet will also undergo a mid-life modernisation at Alstom's Villeneuve site in Switzerland. This upgrade is designed to enhance the trains' performance and ensure their long-term operational reliability.

The contract was booked in Alstom's fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year and is part of the wider development of public transport in the Lausanne area.
