Alstom to supply 18 Avelia Horizon trains for Morocco's high-speed rail expansion
Alstom has secured a contract to provide 18 Avelia Horizon high-speed trains to Morocco's national railway company, ONCF. The deal is part of an expansion of high-speed services connecting Tanger and Marrakech.
French train manufacturer Alstom has signed a contract worth 781 million euros to supply 18 Avelia Horizon high-speed trains to Morocco's national railway company, the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF). The order was registered in Alstom's fourth fiscal quarter of 2024/2025 and is financed in part by the French treasury.
The new double-deck Avelia Horizon trains are intended for the expansion of the high-speed rail line connecting Tanger and Marrakech. According to Alstom, the trains will significantly reduce travel times between the cities while minimizing the carbon footprint.
Leveraging over 40 years of experience in commercial high-speed operations, the Avelia Horizon represents the latest generation of double-deck high-speed trains capable of speeds exceeding 300 km/h. The trains feature two compact, high-performance power cars and articulated double-deck coaches, designed for operational flexibility and passenger comfort.
Alstom highlighted that the Avelia Horizon is engineered to reduce operating costs. This includes a reduced number of bogies, which account for approximately 30% of maintenance expenses. The train's large seating capacity is also noted as a factor in significantly lowering the total cost of operation per seat.
