Alstom to Upgrade Skyway at Houston Intercontinental Airport

Alstom will upgrade the Skyway automated people mover (APM) system at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, Texas, as part of a contract valued at approximately €380 million (US$437 million). The agreement includes the refurbishment of the existing system and 15 years of operations and maintenance services.

The scope of the contract includes the construction of a new operations control center, upgrades to the automatic train control and communications systems, and the deployment of 16 new Innovia APM R vehicles. Station doors across all terminals will also be modernized. Alstom has been operating and maintaining the Skyway at IAH for two decades, utilizing a fleet of Innovia APM 100 vehicles.

The airport is currently undergoing a multi-billion dollar expansion to accommodate a significant increase in passenger traffic, which exceeded 48 million last year. The modernized Skyway system is intended to reduce service disruptions, improve passenger flow between terminals, and enhance the overall travel experience. Enhanced digital communication and monitoring systems are expected to increase operational reliability.

Alstom will provide 15 years of operations and maintenance, supported by a dedicated on-site team of 48 personnel, to ensure the system's reliability during the airport's expansion. The upgrades aim to ensure the APM system continues to serve millions of passengers with high availability and comfort. Interim busing will be provided when the Skyway is out of service.
