Alstom Uses Digital Platform to Improve Train Maintenance

Rail technology company Alstom has enhanced its maintenance operations for the Dubai Tramway project by implementing a digital platform named HealthHub. Introduced in January 2021, the system analyzes real-time data from trains to optimize maintenance schedules and ensure timetable adherence.

Alstom secured an initial 13-year contract with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the maintenance of the Dubai tramway system. The HealthHub platform collects data on over 200 parameters, including train speed and internal carriage temperatures. This data is processed by algorithms designed to identify anomalies and predict potential failures.

The benefit of this digital approach to maintenance is the ability to anticipate failures before they impact service. The system can be programmed with alarms that alert maintenance personnel to potential issues. This allows for the repair of faulty trains, for instance, overnight, thereby avoiding disruptions to passenger services.

HealthHub also enables the creation of a "health index" for each system component. This provides operators, maintenance staff, and transport authorities with a clear overview of the fleet's condition. The platform is web-based, allowing for rule updates without physically altering the trains.
