Alstom, a manufacturer of rail transport systems, has received validation for its near-term emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The targets have been confirmed as consistent with the levels required to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

The SBTi's validation team determined that Alstom Group's scope 1 and 2 target ambition is in line with a 1.5°C trajectory. The company has committed to reducing its absolute direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its sites and indirect emissions by 40% by FY2030/31, using FY2021/22 as a baseline.

Furthermore, Alstom aims to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions stemming from the use of its sold products. For passenger rolling stock, the target is a 42% reduction per passenger-kilometre, and for freight solutions, a 35% reduction per ton-kilometre by FY2030/31. These scope 3 targets align with the Beyond 2°C scenario (B2DS), the most ambitious available for the transport sector.

Alstom updated its emissions targets following its 2021 acquisition of Bombardier Transportation. This acquisition expanded the company's scope and necessitated a revised GHG emissions baseline. The newly approved targets represent an increased level of ambition compared to the previous validated targets. The company also aims for 100% renewable electricity for its operations by the end of 2025.
