Alstom's hydrogen train wins German Sustainability Award for Design

Alstom's Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell train has been honored with the 2022 German Sustainability Design Award. This award recognizes the train's innovative approach to zero-emission passenger transport.

The German Sustainability Award, specifically its Design category, acknowledges technical and social solutions that significantly contribute to sustainable products and lifestyles, aligning with the UN's 2030 Agenda. The jury comprised experts in industrial design, sustainability, academia, business, and the arts.

The Coradia iLint is notable as the world's first mass-produced passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells. It presents an economical and environmentally sound alternative to conventional diesel trains, particularly for non-electrified rail lines. The train's technology integrates clean energy conversion, flexible energy storage batteries, and smart power management.

Alstom aims to become a global leader in alternative rail propulsion technologies. The success of the Coradia iLint has already led to contracts in France and Italy, in addition to its operations in Germany. Its first customer in Germany, Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen, previously received a European Railway Award for its commitment to alternative drives.

Given that the transport sector accounts for over 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the development of emission-free solutions is critical. Alstom is addressing this challenge through advancements in rail transport technology.
