Altman: AI's Impact to Exceed Industrial Revolution, Now Best Time to Enter Job Market
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated AI's impact could surpass the industrial revolution and described the current period as the optimal time for individuals entering the job market.

San Francisco – At OpenAI's DevDay conference, CEO Sam Altman outlined a grand vision for artificial intelligence, comparing its potential societal impact to the industrial revolution. Altman emphasized that AI should empower individuals rather than solely accelerating economic output.
Altman also voiced criticism regarding the measurement of AI capabilities using "tokens," calling it a "terrible metric" that doesn't accurately reflect the value generated by AI tasks. Despite customer preference for token-based pricing, OpenAI is seeking more effective ways to quantify the actual utility of its services.
The company introduced Dots, a new AI agent designed to manage tasks and notifications, aiming to reduce reliance on smartphones. Altman shared a personal anecdote, stating Dots has helped him regain focus and manage his workload more efficiently, mitigating feelings of being overwhelmed.
Addressing AI safety concerns, Altman advocated for a "middle path" approach. He warned against both unchecked advancement, which could lead to uncontrolled outcomes, and complete cessation of development, which risks concentrating power. He stressed that safety measures must precede capability advancements.
Regarding career prospects, Altman advised that the present time is the "best time" to enter the job market. He projected that the AI era will drive significant economic growth and create new opportunities, even as some traditional job roles may disappear.
