Altman and Musk Clash Over Space Data Centers

A dispute between AI leader Sam Altman and businessman Elon Musk on social media has brought into focus the debate surrounding the future of space-based data centers.

Altman responded to Musk's accusations of being a "scammer" by stating that Musk is the one "selling short-term space datacenters" to public market investors. This assertion echoes the views of many experts who believe that space data centers are unlikely to become a significant business in the near future.

SpaceX's plans for a fleet of orbital data centers are a key driver behind the company's substantial valuation. These proposals are intended to support the development of the company's AI models and offer a potential "neocloud" amid the AI boom.

However, industry experts, including founders of other space data center ventures, Google teams working on orbital compute projects, and independent engineers, express caution. They suggest that significant progress will not occur until rocket launches become considerably cheaper and the capability to mass-produce high-powered satellites improves.

Musk's response is tied to the ongoing development of the Starship rocket. If SpaceX can achieve stable and repeated flights of its spacecraft, the business case for space data centers may shift, but substantial obstacles still need to be overcome.
