Altman says OpenAI IPO in 2026 would be 'ill-advised'

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that the artificial intelligence company does not plan an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2026. Altman described such a timeline as "ill-advised" during an interview with Fortune, citing concerns related to AI safety.

The CEO addressed various topics during the 45-minute discussion, including a recent hacking incident at Hugging Face and the concept of recursive self-improvement in AI. He also commented on the potential for developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) that surpasses human control.

Altman acknowledged that creating AI beyond human control is "absolutely" possible. However, he committed to implementing measures to prevent such an outcome, even if it requires pausing training. "There are risks we should not be able to incur on behalf of humanity," Altman stated.

OpenAI is not rushing towards a public offering, prioritizing safety considerations in its development path.
