Aluminium Industry Faces Shift Towards Low-Carbon Production and Recycling
The aluminium industry is undergoing significant transformation driven by the pursuit of low-carbon supply chains and increased recycling. Recent developments indicate that production scale alone is no longer the sole determinant of commercial success.

The aluminium industry is at a pivotal moment, with a strong emphasis on developing low-carbon production methods and enhancing recycling capabilities. Leading producers are investing in recycling assets, collaborating with customers on lower-emission products, and securing greater control over upstream resources.
Rio Tinto is expanding its regional billet supply in North America through a partnership with RevoCast. This initiative combines low-carbon primary aluminium from Rio Tinto's Kitimat operations with recycled aluminium processed by RevoCast, aiming to meet the demands of regional extrusion customers. The model highlights the benefits of integrating supply chain proximity with recycling.
Hydro and CHANEL are collaborating to develop low-carbon aluminium packaging for cosmetics and skincare products. Their goal is to achieve a carbon footprint approaching 3.0 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per kilogram by 2030, utilizing Hydro's REDUXA primary aluminium and incorporating recycled materials. This partnership underscores how material sustainability aligns with demanding packaging design requirements.
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is strengthening its recycling presence by acquiring a majority stake in the Italian company Eco Green. This acquisition increases EGA's annual recycling capacity to over 400,000 tonnes, supporting its strategy to broaden its offerings and improve customer proximity.
These industry shifts suggest that future competitive advantages in aluminium will increasingly stem from sustainability, recycling integration, and customer-centric solutions. Procurement and strategy teams are advised to evaluate suppliers comprehensively, considering both material quality and environmental performance.
