Alvotech and JAMP Pharma receive marketing authorization for biosimilar in Canada
Health Canada has granted JAMP Pharma marketing authorization for Jamteki, a biosimilar to Stelara® developed by Alvotech. This marks the second biosimilar approved in Canada under their partnership.
Alvotech and Canadian pharmaceutical company JAMP Pharma Group announced on November 14, 2023, that Health Canada has granted JAMP Pharma marketing authorization for AVT04, a biosimilar to Stelara® (ustekinumab) developed by Alvotech. The product will be marketed in Canada under the brand name Jamteki™.
Jamteki™ is the second biosimilar to receive marketing authorization in Canada developed under the partnership between Alvotech and JAMP Pharma. The companies previously launched Simlandi®, a biosimilar to Humira® (adalimumab), in Canada last year.
Robert Wessman, Chairman and CEO of Alvotech, stated that the strong demand for biosimilars in Canada indicates a need for affordable biological medicines. He emphasized that Jamteki's approval is a significant step toward increasing access to more affordable healthcare.
Louis Pilon, President and CEO of JAMP Pharma, commented that the introduction of Jamteki™ strengthens the company's position in the biosimilar market and provides Canadian patients with a more affordable option for ustekinumab treatment. JAMP Pharma has established its BioJAMP entity to bolster its standing in the Canadian biosimilar market.
The approval comes as Alvotech awaits a final decision from the European Commission regarding marketing authorization in the EU, following a recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Stelara® is a registered trademark of Johnson & Johnson.
