Alvotech and Stada agree on biosimilar partnership

Alvotech and the global pharmaceutical company STADA Arzneimittel AG have announced an exclusive strategic partnership for the commercialization of seven biosimilar candidates. The agreement covers all key European markets and selected markets outside of Europe. The biosimilar pipeline targets conditions including autoimmune diseases, oncology, inflammation, and ophthalmology.

Under the terms of the agreement, Alvotech will manage the development, registration, and supply of the biosimilars within the European Union. STADA will hold exclusive commercialization rights for the products in most of the key European territories. The originator products for these seven biosimilars generate approximately $50 billion in global sales, contributing to a significant contract value. The deal includes an upfront payment along with subsequent milestone payments over the next four years.

Róbert Wessman, Alvotech’s founder and Chairman, stated that the partnership is a significant development. "This partnership has the resources and vision to accelerate the introduction and adoption of new biosimilars for patients in Europe who will get better access to high-quality products," Wessman said.

STADA CEO Peter Goldschmidt emphasized the scale of the collaboration. "The agreement with Alvotech is one of the largest commercial biosimilar cooperation’s to date, accelerating improved patient access to high quality biosimilars," Goldschmidt commented. He added that the partnership is a significant opportunity to expand STADA’s biosimilar portfolio.

The collaboration is poised to strengthen both companies' positions in the rapidly growing biosimilars market, particularly in Europe, amid increasing demand for cost-effective biologic treatments.
