Alzheimer Research Initiative Receives Award for Health Communication

The Alzheimer Forschung Initiative (AFI) has received the "Health:Angel" award, described as the "Oscar of Health Communication," from the Health Media Award e.V. Based in Düsseldorf, the organization was recognized for its nearly three decades of work in raising awareness and providing reliable information on Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

The award was shared with Okka Gundel, a prominent television journalist known for her work on German public broadcaster ARD's news programs. Gundel has served as an ambassador for AFI for the past ten years. Her personal advocacy, including openly discussing her own battle with cancer, was highlighted as a significant factor in the award decision.

"This award touches me personally, as Alzheimer's is a matter close to my heart. We must not forget the elderly," Gundel stated at the ceremony. She emphasized the importance of public education in helping families cope with the diagnosis and underscored AFI's dual role in supporting affected individuals and their families, as well as funding research projects aimed at finding a cure.

Tony Westwood, Grand Jury President for the Health Media Award, cited Gundel's decade-long voluntary commitment and her courage in publicly addressing health issues. The "Health:Angel" award acknowledges AFI's sustained dedication to advancing research and providing crucial information and support for those impacted by Alzheimer's.
